Post-Partum Pain - Not Your New Normal

Transitioning between pregnancy to post-partum takes a lot of adjusting! Not only mentally for the mother, but physically as well. Of course lack of sleep, restless nights, milk production, constantly carrying a newborn, and recovery from labor are all part of the physical, but there are also changes happening internally that we don't often address until symptoms arise. During pregnancy, the hormone relaxin is released throughout the body to affect ligaments and joints to help open the pelvis during labor and delivery. It is a common reason why women feel discomforts and pains through their pregnancy. After a baby is born, the hormone continues to circulate in smaller amounts, as the body returns to it's new "normal" state. This process can take months and can often times lead to other pains that a new mom may experience, especially when coupled with cradling a new born, breastfeeding, and sometimes less desirable sleeping positions. New moms may feel joint pains that they have not experienced before. Although it is common, it does not need to be normal. Your body is going through a lot of changes and addressing proper stability and mobility of your joints can be helped with chiropractic care and proper rehabilitation. Chiropractic care, through adjustments and manipulations, can help correct spinal restrictions and restore normal muscle balance.

Commonly, we see new moms in the office with lingering pelvic or low back pain or new onset of neck and shoulder pain. Radiating pain into the leg, such as sciatica, can also occur post-partum. These symptoms can be evaluated, addressed and treated by a chiropractor. Coupled with proper exercises, it can be an effective way to help with pain instead of medication. We take into consideration mode of delivery and symptoms during pregnancy during the initial evaluation for a more comprehensive exam that will help focus treatment and therapy for each new mom.
