Motivating MOM of the month July
We are so excited to announce our MOM (Motivating Mom of the Month) for July! Each month we will take a moment to honor one of our local FIT4MOM LSBWK NoVa Moms for her efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle and for her dedication to the program. This month we honor Kathy Murphy from our Woodbridge village!
Kathy just makes me happy! It has bene such a pleasure to watch her conquering her post-pregnancy fitness goals over the past year - with hubby and baby in tow! I’m so proud to count her among our weekend warrior women, and can’t wait to see what the next year brings for her and her beautiful family.
~Heather Hilton, River Mill Park Stroller Strides Instructor
Kathy always comes to class with a smile on her face and the cutest little guy (Jackson) in her stroller! I’m so happy I have been able to see her more often over her summer vacation. Her smile brightens my day! I had the pleasure of participating in the Run club with her in the spring as well. She amaze me with how hard she works…she just never stops. She is so strong and such a wonderful role model for her son. Keep going, Kathy, you are awesome!
~Heather Hamtak, Woodbridge Stroller Strides and Stroller Barre Instructor
Kathy truly understands balance. She teaches young children all week - a job that demands an incredible amount of patience and creativity, and can be very tiring. She does all of this while training with both her husband and son for Run Club races. Plus, she knows how to have fun! She always has a big smile on her face which make everyone happy around her. I just love being around Kathy and the whole Murphy clan!
~Robin Houlahan, Run Club Coach and Stroller Strides Instructor
Where are you originally from?
I am a born and raised Northern Virginian. I grew up in Springfield, VA.
When did you join FIT4MOM?
April 2017 with Fit4Baby
What classes do you attend?
During the school year, I am a weekend warrior at River Mill Park/Potomac Mills. During the summer, I can add Stroller Barre/Stroller Strides at Potomac Mills. I also have done the last two sessions of Run Club.
Who is your workout buddy and their age?
My workout buddy is my 13 month old son, Jackson. On the weekends, my husband, Ethan, joins me for the Saturday Family classes (when he can).
What is your favorite thing about FIT4MOM?
What isn't there to love about FIT4MOM?!? I get to work out with my child and have fun doing it. I get to meet other moms who are also going through very similar things. THe Mom's night outs that I have done have been a blast. Adding Run Club has allowed me to build up my stamina for running again.
How has FIT4MOM changed your lifestyle choices?
FIT4MOM has given me the chance to begin to instill a healthy lifestyle in my son. Even though he is only 13 months old, he is watching what we are doing. I want him to be healthy and active and the best way I can do that is be healthy and active myself.
What is your current job? Or what did you do before staying at home (if you don’t currently work outside the home)?
For the past nine years, I was a special education teacher in Fairfax County. Next school year, I will make the move closer to home (yay, shorter commutes!) and will be a special education teacher in Prince William County.
Share your thoughts on the concept of “it takes a village” – is it important for moms to join a village?
100% yes! It is very important to be a part of a village! Having a sounding board when your child is doing something and you need advice from others is vital. There's no right answers sometimes, but knowing that others have gone through these stages and say it's going to be okay is so helpful. It's getting to meet people, who just so happen to live in your neighborhood, and become friends with them. And then it's seeing your little one begin to develop a friendship and interact with others at playgroup or after class.
What is your favorite beverage?
Have to have my coffee every day.
What is your favorite dessert?
You are given 4 hours of FREE babysitting. What would you do?
Take my husband and hop on our bikes and go out for a nice, long bike ride on the W & OD trail. We did that all the time pre-Jackson and look forward to getting out there again when Jackson is just a tad bit older.
What is your ultimate child-free vacation destination?
Germany and Ireland.
How has becoming a mother changed you?
I've definitely learned to try my hardest to separate my home from my work life (which as a teacher is REALLY hard to do). Now, since Jackson is more aware of things, he's taught me to live in the moment and enjoy the small things.
I am happiest when...my family is happy.
