MOM of the Month-January Patty S.png

Motivating MOM of the Month January

We are so excited to announce our MOM (Motivating Mom of the Month) for January! Each month we will take a moment to honor one of our local FIT4MOM LSBWK NoVa Moms for her efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle and for her dedication to the program. This month we honor Patty Salerno from our Burke village!

Patty is one truly inspiring woman! Her positive vibes just light up a room! Ever since meeting Patty, I feel so lucky to get to share a workout, great conversations and some laughs with her. With her two beautiful daughters and little one on the way she has so much great energy and upbeat attitude – every single day. Might I also mention her lunge walks are gorgeous! Love ya, Patty!.”

~Candice Agustin, Stroller Strides and Stroller Barre Instructor

Patty and her girls bring smiles and positive energy to every class. She is always there to help if you need it or commiserate if you’re having a tough time (burpees, I’m looking at you.) It’s been amazing watching her family grow and I can’t wait to meet her new addition!

~Jenny Bezos, Playgroup Captain – Burke Village

We asked Patty a few questions so we can all get to know her better, and here is what she had to say:

Where are you originally from?

Growing up my father was in the Army so we moved around a lot. Both of my parents are originally from New England however, we now all call Northern Virginia "home".

When did you join FIT4MOM?

My first class was a Stroller Strides class at the Burke Grand Opening in 2016. I signed up shortly after!

What classes do you attend?

I attend the Stroller Strides/Barre classes at the Burke location. I have been to a couple of the other locations, but you can mainly find me in Burke.

Who is your workout buddy and their age?

I have two daughters Genevieve (3) and Valerie (20 months). Genevieve started pre-school this fall so she rarely gets to attend class with me anymore, most days it is just Valerie and myself. However, I am pregnant with child number 3 (due in March) so we will be joined by a new workout buddy shortly.

What is your favorite thing about FIT4MOM?

I have always been a "gym rat" and love working out. I was having a hard time leaving my daughters with a sitter (either at home or at the gym) since my time with them is already shortened by my work and school schedule. My favorite thing about FIT4MOM is that I can get a great workout with kids in tow.

How has FIT4MOM changed your lifestyle choices?

FIT4MOM hasn't necessarily changed my lifestyle choices, but it has allowed me to share my choices with my children. I have always been a believer in taking care of yourself through working out and eating right. FIT4MOM has allowed my daughters to see me making these choices. I love watching them try some of the exercises that they saw me doing during class!

What is your current job? Or what did you do before staying at home (if you don’t currently work outside the home)?

I have spent the past eleven years working by providing professional development for teachers both at the school and district level. Prior to that I was an elementary teacher. Once Genevieve was born (2014), I switched to a part-time position and now work two days a week providing professional development to teachers. I am also in school - trying to finish up a PhD program in Education at George Mason and occasionally they rope me into teaching a course there. Life is busy - but we are having fun!

Share your thoughts on the concept of “it takes a village” – is it important for moms to join a village?

The best part of a "village" is having someone who understands what your day is like without you having to say anything. It is the idea that of asking questions and getting advice when it comes to kids, cooking dinner, and parenting. And it is the ability to reach out and ask "who has room in their stroller for my kid this week?"

What is your favorite beverage?

I am boring - water is my favorite beverage. I will occasionally get a root beer if I am eating Italian food. But I am basically a water girl - no ice, no lemon...boring.

What is your favorite dessert?

CHOCOLATE!!! Anything chocolate is a win for me, the more chocolate the better!

You are given 4 hours of FREE babysitting. What would you do?

What I want to do is go get my nails done and possibly see a movie. What I need to do is run errands and organize my house.

What is your ultimate child-free vacation destination?

The beach! With a book!

How has becoming a mother changed you?

My memory is now shot!

I love every minute that I get to spend with my daughters, but I think that trying to remember everything for them has made me forget everything else. So, if you want me to pick up something from the store for you - just make sure I write it down!

It has also changed me for the better - I also feel like I appreciate the small things of life much more.

I am happiest when...’

I get to spend time with family! I have a very large, close extended family and I love cherish spending time with both my immediate and extended family.

Check back to see who our MOM will be in February 2018!
