MOM of the Month-February Bex L.png

Motivating MOM of the month February

We are so excited to announce our MOM (Motivating Mom of the Month) for February! Each month we will take a moment to honor one of our local FIT4MOM LSBWK NoVa Moms for her efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle and for her dedication to the program. This month we honor Bex Lam from our Springfield village!

Bex came in strong from the start, determined to make a healthy change in her life. I see her push herself in each class and she is such a great support and inspiration for our village. Bex you are a rock star momma!

~Jen G., Playgroup Captain for Springfield and Kingstowne Villages

Bex is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met. She pushes a triple stroller throughout class and has completely committed to a lifestyle change through Body Back Transformation. She challenges herself during every single workout and never quits. Not only is she physically stronger but she is seeing how mentally she is dealing with daily situations in a healthier way too. This mama, is working so hard to be a positive example for her 3 beautiful kiddos and making the changes for her whole family to lead a healthier lifestyle. Well done, Bex! I can’t wait to see where you go in the next phase of your journey!”

~Krista L., Instructor & Client Relations Manager

We asked Bex a few questions so we can all get to know her better, and here is what she had to say:

Where are you originally from?

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area.

When did you join FIT4MOM?

September 2017? Possibly October.

What classes do you attend?

I am currently doing Body Back with Krista at My Gym in Kingstowne at o' dark thirty on Monday and Thursday mornings. I try to join as many Stroller Strides and Stroller Barre classes at the Springfield Town Center as I can.

Who is your workout buddy and their age?

My workout buddies are my son, Isaac (11 months old) and his three year old twin sisters, Ruby and Holly.

What is your favorite thing about FIT4MOM?

One of my main obstacles to working out has been what to do with my kids while exercising. The early morning Body Back classes allow me to let the kids sleep while I venture out into the pre-dawn darkness. With Stroller Strides, I take them along with me and don't need to worry about childcare.

How has FIT4MOM changed your lifestyle choices?

Through Body Back, I am eating healthier, not self-medicating the mom life via chocolate on a daily basis and exercising more.

What is your current job? Or what did you do before staying at home (if you don’t currently work outside the home)?

I am currently on my third iteration of jobs. In my first life, I was an inner city middle school math and science teacher outside of Oakland, California for nine years. I left teaching to get my Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco. When I decided to follow my husband wherever the Navy sent him, we first ended up in in Hawaii and I was an outpatient pharmacist at Tripler Army Medical Center and later ran the Family Medicine Pharmacy there before moving to the East Coast.

Share your thoughts on the concept of “it takes a village” – is it important for moms to join a village?

It is vital for moms to have a village, even if it is just having adult conversation a few times a week. As a military spouse, my given village is thousands of miles away, but through the wonders of the internet and the Fit4Mom ladies, I have a chosen village that provides encouragement and empathy. It is often easy to feel alone as a mom. Being surrounded by little ones that demand your every moment of attention, it is easy to lose yourself in their needs. You still exist though. The pre-MOM you is still there and needs to see daylight, otherwise it is easy to not be grounded and let the demands of "momming" make you feel like you are drowning. Coming to classes has helped me find the surface again and come up for much needed air.

What is your favorite beverage?

Water. I am supposed to say water, right? ;)

Mojitos are pretty tasty too, though.

What is your favorite dessert?

Crème brulee comes to mind, but I pretty much love all sweets.

You are given 4 hours of FREE babysitting. What would you do?

What is your ultimate child-free vacation destination?

This is a tough one. I love traveling and being adventurous. I would really love to go to either Tanzania and go on safari, see Victoria Falls in Zambia, or go to China to see the Floating Mountains in Hunan Province.

How has becoming a mother changed you?

I see my childhood differently now. I always knew that mom did the best she could with whatever knowledge and resources she had at the time, but I just didn't understand how hard and how fantastic and how heart wrenching and how guilt inducing motherhood could be.

I am happiest when...

I can make someone else laugh.

Check back to see who our MOM will be in March 2018!
