We are so excited to announce our MOM (Motivating Mom of the Month) for December! Each month we will take a moment to honor one of our local FIT4MOM LSBWK NoVa Moms for her efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle and for her dedication to the program. This month we honor Lya Whitmon from our Woodbridge village!
“Lya always shows up to class with a smile, an amazing attitude and the motivation to work hard! I enjoy having her in my classes so much. It has been a pleasure for me to watch her little girl, Hunter, grow and develop into the smart one year old she is today! I just love hearing Lya’s stories about how Hunter copies our exercise moves and songs at home. She is such a quick learner and is growing up so fast! Lya is always very welcoming when new mamas join our village and is always available to listen or give advice to others when needed. She put in so much hard work and transformed her body in Body Back. She is one hot mama! What a wonderful role model and friend to our FIT4MOM family.”

“Not sure if Lya realizes what an impact she had on me as the franchise owner; early this summer I had a tough time in Woodbridge. I was the only instructor covering classes and was on the verge of closing it down because I was burnt out. Then came Lya! I had a few moms in class at warm up and Lya glanced at us and with full enthusiasm said ‘I need me some of THAT!’ and my reply was ‘Well, join us!’ and she did. As soon as class was over she signed up without hesitation – from that moment on I knew I had to keep Woodbridge open and that our village would grow again and it did. Lya gave me a renewed energy to continue this venture that I began. Thank you Lya for your awesome strong efforts in class, for your beautiful contagious smile, for making moms feel comfortable, for being an amazing MOM to Hunter (she is the cutest little thing ever!) and just for being YOU! You are so real and honest – it’s beautiful. Inside and out.”

Who is your workout buddy and their age?
Hunter, 1 year old
What is your favorite thing about FIT4MOM?
The comradery amongst all the Moms, the exchange of advice, ideas, and opportunities to share ‘Mommy’ stories with one another. Also the fact that it is a safe nonjudgmental zone.
How has FIT4MOM changed your lifestyle choices?
Fit4Mom has changed my lifestyle choices in many ways starting with my self-perception; being a new Mom there were (are) some moments I felt like I was failing and just not enough, and many times isolated. After joining this phenomenal community I learned to appreciate all the moments and days of success with managing this new role and to stop putting pressure on myself to be perfect. From the motivating encouragement during our workouts from the instructors, the meditation at the end of each Body Back class, to the weekly podcast, I’ve regained so much confidence in all my abilities.
Also with the nutritional guidance during Body Back transformation, the food that I choose to eat and prepare for my family is so much healthier.
What is your current job? Or what did you do before staying at home (if you don’t currently work outside the home)?
I am a Speech-language Pathologist and am employed by Medstar-VNA.
Share your thoughts on the concept of “it takes a village” – is it important for moms to join a village?
Mothers know and understand Mothers’ struggles! It is so comforting to know that you are not the only one going through difficult phases and milestones with your child and that others experienced the same and actually survived! When you have a village of supporters it is just plain easier to deal with daily surprises/changes/challenges of parenting.

What is your favorite dessert?
You are given 4 hours of FREE babysitting. What would you do?
1 hour workout, 1 hour hair, 1 hour mani/pedi, and 1 hour nap!
How has becoming a mother changed you?
Becoming a Mom has brought out a very nurturing and sensitive side of myself that I didn’t even know existed. However, my patience for nonsense has dwindled down to none!
I do realize that I have this small person listening to every word I say, and watching what I do, and how I respond in various situations. I don’t want to be the Mom that says, “Do as I say not as I do”!!! So daily I am working on achieving balance and being the best me possible!
I am happiest when...
I finish a Stroller Strides and/or Body Back workout, I feel energized and ready!
