MOM of the Month-June 17 Rebecca C..png

Motivating Mom of the Month

We are so excited to announce our MOM (Motivating Mom of the Month) for June! Each month we will take a moment to honor one of our local FIT4MOM LSBWK NoVa Moms for her efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle and for her dedication to the program. This month we honor Rebecca Carlson from our Burke village!

“Rebecca is like a professional mom-friend. What I mean by that is, she’s super funny, supportive, cares about her children but also her girlfriends, and it is just so great to have her in our village. She’s super knowledgeable and always willing to help out a fellow mom. She is just really good at being a friend! She’s also dedicated to attending Stroller Strides classes with one or both of her adorably dramatic children. I love seeing her every week!”

~Ginger M., Stroller Strides Instructor

“I had the pleasure of meeting Rebecca at our free Burke Lake Park soft opening class in April 2016. That day will always stick in my mind because she has such a way about her that creates memories. Rebecca is so friendly, outgoing and really enjoys talking about any topic at hand. I have to laugh so hard sometimes because I’m never certain if her stories about her kids are made up or real (they are ALWAYS real)! Her littles keep her on her toes and surely provide lots to chat about. We love having Rebecca, William and Theresa in class. Especially when William asks me to sing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle for our strength station. (No I do not know the song, nor do I sing it!)”

~Shannon Link, Franchise Owner/Instructor

We asked Rebecca a few questions so we can all get to know her better, and here is what she had to say:

1. Who are the members of your family?

The Carlson home includes me, my husband, James, my son, William, age 5, and my daughter, Theresa, age 2.

2. What is/was your career?

I am trained in parish catechetical ministry through the University of Notre Dame's Echo program - most recently, I worked as a youth minister at a church in the DC area. I left my job soon after William was born but I currently do some volunteer ministry at my church and for an online forum.

3. How long have you been a member of FIT4MOM Lorton-Springfield-Burke-Woodbridge-Kingstowne, and what has it done for you?

I started in April of 2016 just before Theresa turned one and it really filled a void. Since having kids, I'd always been active in several different mom groups, but with the exception of a short-lived walking group when William was a baby I was really missing having fitness be a regular part of my days. I played team sports and/or coached youth sports for nearly my whole life up until becoming a mom. I lost that part of my identity but now I feel like I have it back. I do much better both working out and being a mom as part of a community and FIT4MOM gives me that support.

4. What is your favorite class exercise?

Clothespin tag or anything competitive.

5. What is one of your current wellness goals?

I used to be able to do a few pull-ups and I would love to be able to do one again. In the meantime I can make it across the monkey bars at the playground!

6. What is something that has surprised you about motherhood?

There is so much that is out of my control! One thing I can control is how I react to different situations, but this takes a surprising amount of work.

7. List 3 of your favorite things.

Coffee, the beach (Jersey shore!), Moms' Night Out

8. What is your proudest mommy moment so far?

I love the times when my children truly care for each other with no prompting from me, like when they hold hands in the car or one gets hurt and the other rushes over to give them a kiss.

9. Any advice for other moms out there?

I think every mom should get out of the house often and also join a group (or two – definitely FIT4MOM)! The DC area in particular has so much to offer both in places to go and communities to join. It takes a village - we aren't meant to do this alone!

Rebecca, we love your competitiveness! You bring out that inner athlete in other moms that attend classes with you, making all of you work harder. Thank you for everything you bring to our village!
