July's MOM - Motivating Mom of the Month
July 31, 2016
We are so excited to announce our MOM (Motivating Mom of the Month) for July! Each month we will take a moment to honor one of our local FIT4MOM Lorton~Springfield~Burke~Woodbridge Moms for her efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle and for her dedication to the program. This month we honor Erin Caines from our Burke village!
"The word I have often used to describe Erin is determined. Not long after I met her, Erin and I did Body Back. At the time she had three kids and didn’t like the shape she was in. She set a goal and made losing weight look easy. After having her fourth baby Erin wanted to get back in shape again so she signed up for another session of Body Back. During that time I saw her at a St. Patrick’s Day dinner at church. While the rest of us chowed down on corned beef and cabbage Erin was satisfied eating the salad she brought from home. That is determination!
A few years ago Erin and Larry decided that their family needed a larger house for their growing family. With what seemed like no stress or anxiety (and in record time) she and Larry got their house ready for sale, found a new one and moved in. In the time it would take most of us to research realtors, she saw the need, set her goal and accomplished it.
Finally, the most impressive example of her determination is when Erin decided that the best thing for her kids was homeschooling. Only a determined, smart and dedicated person can take on such a role and Erin once again does it well and makes it look easy".

"Erin is incredibly inspiring. Not only is she the mother of four wonderful kids but she also home schools her children. With all that, she still makes time to take care of herself. I first met Erin back in February. I hadn't seen her in a while due to vacations and the transformation was amazing. She looked incredibly healthy and happy. I told her how great she looked and she said that Stroller Strides and Body Back were amazing and helped her gain her strength and confidence back".

"Strong, determined, fierce, amazing, just a few words to describe Erin. A mom of 4, who home schools her children, yet still makes time for herself and always has a smile on her face. She has rocked Body Back and I can't wait to continue this journey with her".

We asked Erin a few questions so we can all get to know her better, and here is what she had to say:
1. Who are the members of your family?
I have four children--Maura (10.5), Jack (7.5), Bridget (3.5), and Michael (15 months). My husband, Larry, and I have been married for 12.5 years.
2. What is/was your career?
I've definitely experienced an evolution in my career path...right out of college I was a music therapist at an inpatient psychiatric hospital and then took those skills to the public school system in which I worked with special education students. I returned to work when my first daughter was 8 months old, switching over to music education, where I remained until 2012. I left my job to care for my kids full-time with the birth of my 3rd baby and am now officially a "SAHM". Our family made the decision to homeschool our children last year, so I am now beginning the second year of my "career" as homeschooling mom of four. :)
3. How long have you been a member of FIT4MOM
Lorton~Springfield~Burke~Woodbridge, and what has it done for you?
I joined Fit4Mom Lorton~Springfield~Burke~Woodbridge in January of this year and have participated in Stroller Strides and Body Back. Fit4Mom has done so much for me...the most important for me was helping me begin to overcome my postpartum depression. Connecting with other mothers and exercising on a regular basis have been instrumental in my recovery.
4. What is your favorite class exercise?
My favorite class exercise is squats. Regular old squats. I can do those all day. Jump squats, no. ;)
5. What is something that has surprised you about motherhood?
Motherhood has most surprised me in its intensity. I never imagined how all-encompassing it is, every moment of every day.
6. List 3 of your favorite things:
I guess I can't cop out and list my kids because I have four of them! I suppose three of my favorite things are quiet, curling up with a good book, and spontaneous "I love you's" from my kiddos.
7. What is your proudest mommy moment so far?
My proudest mommy moment was when my 10 year old (then a 9 year old) received the coach's award for her swim team. I was touched that others recognized what a strong person she was already becoming and know that I had a lot (although not everything!) to do with that!
8. Any advice for other moms out there?
My advice for other moms would be to listen to your gut. There will be lots of advice given, both sought after and freely given. Some things that work for other families will work for yours and some won't, and that's okay. Sometimes you will need to be your kids' champion and sometimes you will need to take a step back and let your kids help themselves. You know your child better than anyone else, so trust yourself to make the right call.
Thank you, Erin, for being such a valuable part of Our Village here at FIT4MOM Lorton~Springfield~Burke~Woodbridge and for showing us that there really is ME in MothErhood!
Check back to see who our MOM will be in August!
