December 2016 MOM of the month!

We are so excited to announce our MOM (Motivating Mom of the Month) for December! Each month we will take a moment to honor one of our local Fit4Mom LSBW NoVa Moms for her efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle and for her dedication to the program. This month we honor Beth Lombardo from our Woodbridge village!

I have truly enjoyed having Beth at our Stroller Strides Woodbridge classes and getting to know her. She is a strong and amazing women; mom to 2 children and a Registered Nurse, who is still working while juggling her mom role too! In class, Beth is always willing to try anything that I throw at her and she powers through with a smile on her face! She is determined and dedicated. We are so thankful to have Beth as part of our Village!”

I just love Beth! She has a great personality and is up for anything. Since Barre is new, most of the moves are new too and she is always right there with me trying out things that the group may not think they can do. She never resists, never quits & gives it her all every class. I tell her (& the others) she is my SB Beth not SS Beth. True to her nature, she just laughs & goes along with me .

We asked Beth a few questions so we can all get to know her better, and here is what she had to say:

1. Who are the members of your family?

My husband, Tom, and I have been together for almost 17 years (high school sweethearts) and married for 8.5 years. In January 2013 we had our daughter, Eileen. Then in April of 2016 we had our son, Elliott.

2. What is/was your career?

I am a registered nurse in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. I have been a nurse for 10 years. I have been at Sentara for 6 of those years. I worked in the ICU there for 4 years and in the cath lab for just over 2 years. I worked part time after I had my daughter, and then once I had Elliott I made the decision to stay home with the kids full time during the days. I still am on-call for the cath lab a few night and weekend shifts a month, it helps to keep up my skills.

3. How long have you been a member of FIT4MOM Lorton-Springfield-Burke-Woodbridge, and what has it done for you?

I joined FIT4MOM in August 2016. It has been a life-saver for me. After I stopped working and I was staying home all day with 2 kids I needed an out. I needed to meet more moms, and do something to keep me active. Stroller Strides and Stroller Barre have done just that for me. I have made great friends, and it has done wonders for my morale.

4. What is your favorite class exercise?

In Stroller Barre, I like almost every exercise involving the ball. It forces me to engage my core and hold good form in my legs. The ball holds me accountable because if I lose my form or relax the ball will drop.

In Stroller Strides, I like wall sits with tricep dips and Rocky punch sit ups (I still struggle to do these, but that's part of why I like them). Up until stroller strides and stroller barre, I hadn't done a full sit-up in...well, let's just say I can't remember the last time I was able to do a full sit up.

5. What is one of your current wellness goals?

I want to change the way I eat, and eat healthier. I don't want to diet, that is a short-term solution. I want to find healthier foods that I like (I am a pretty picky eater!), and make smarter food choices in the long run. My almost 4 year old eats so much healthier than I do. I feed my daughter healthy foods, but then I turn around and leave the fruits and veggies off of my own plate.

6. What is something that has surprised you about motherhood?

I'm surprised at how fast my children's lives are flying by. Everyone warned me that it goes fast, but I still wasn't prepared for how true that really is. I really feel like my daughter was just a little baby (she's about to be 4), and I feel like I just brought my son home from the hospital and he is 7.5 months. I'm am trying to treasure every moment and keep track of all the wonderful memories so I won't forget them in the years to come.

7. List 3 of your favorite things.

Wine, books, and the beach (All of these, of course, after my kids and husband!)

8. What is your proudest mommy moment so far?

My proudest moment would be watching my kids interact and seeing how much they love each other. My daughter's favorite thing in the morning is to go get her brother out of the crib. She gets so excited to see him and he beams from ear to ear when he sees her. She loves to play with her brother and make him laugh, and Elliott thinks she is just hysterical! I know they are young now, but I hope their relationship stays like this forever!

9. Any advice for other moms out there?

Remember you're not alone. Being a mom (staying at home or working) can be isolating. You feel like you're doing it by yourself and no one knows or understands what you are going through. Lean on someone, talk to someone, get out of the house. Whether it's someone you met at FIT4MOM, other friends, co-workers, family, or your spouse, ask for help when you need it. We have all been there. Who better to vent to, ask questions, or ask for advice than another mom. And not to be cliché but it really "takes a village"!
